Learn more about the region at the visitor center Mar and Klif, or explore the picturesque river Luts, part of the Elfstedenroute, in a rented sloop.
Just a stone’s throw from myVAYA you will also find one of the most popular kitesurfing spots in Europe. But there are many other activities nearby, such as mountain biking, sailing, canoeing or supping. In short, there are countless opportunities to enjoy the adventure, as these are just a few examples of what Gaasterland has to offer.
The IJselmeer
The IJsselmeer is the largest recreational area in the Netherlands and is just steps away from myVAYA. Since the reclamation of the Zuiderzee, people have been enjoying this vast expanse of water. Whether you are on the water for sailing, supping, boating, (kite-)surfing or other water sports, or just relaxing on the waterfront on the beaches, swimming or walking along the shoreline, there is something for everyone.
A bike ride along the shores of the IJsselmeer offers beautiful views and takes you to surprising places. For example, discover the real cliffs near MYVAYA, such as the Oudemirdummer and Mirnser cliffs, or visit the idyllic fishing harbor of Laaxum, the smallest fishing harbor in Europe.
Want to relax for a while? Then visit trendy beach pavilion ‘t Mar in Mirns or enjoy live music during a relaxing Sunday afternoon at lounge restaurant Badmeester Keimpe on Slotermeer Lake in Balk. With so many options, there is always something to do at the IJsselmeer!


The Frisian lakes
Discover the enchanting world of the Frisian Lakes, which are just a stone’s throw from myVAYA. The Slotermeer, the Fluessen and the Morra are just a few of the many lakes in this region. By the way, did you know that all the lakes in Friesland are connected? Rent a sloop or other boat, also available close to the accommodation, and explore the vast waters of the Frisian Lakes.
Enjoy breathtaking water landscapes interspersed with historic villages and towns, all within short boating distance of each other. Cruise to Sneekermeer Lake and enjoy a scenic lunch in charming Sneek, dock in Sloten, the smallest Elfsteden town, or explore historic Workum and visit the famous Jopie Huisman Museum. Also explore the natural splendor of the Luts, a narrow river located near myVAYA.
Of course, you can also enjoy the beauty of the Frisian Lakes by car or bicycle. Take your time to enjoy, because we are not in a hurry in Friesland.
The Rijster Forest
The Rijsterbos is one of the most famous forests in Friesland, with a rich history dating back to 1676 when it was created by the Amsterdam regent Hiob de Wildt. Once elegant ladies in billowing skirts strolled along the stately forest avenues here, but today it is a beloved family forest. Explore the “Rysterbosk” by following the red or blue posts for marked hiking trails. Even more exciting is wandering along old paths and suddenly being surprised by the breathtaking view of the IJsselmeer from the Mirnserklif.


The Wyldemerk
The Wyldemerk in Gaasterland has the honor of being the first official dragonfly sanctuary in the Netherlands. From spring until (after) summer, you can admire half of all Dutch dragonfly species here. On a beautiful day, the Wyldemerk also offers an enchanting setting for swimming, boating, biking and hiking. Take a relaxing cruise to the Wyldemerk via the Luts River, which takes you through the woods, and discover for yourself the breathtaking beauty of nature.
